Fallen Star

Don Maynard is an artist who works with a variety of media including painting, sculpture and multi-media installations. Primarily based in Kingston, Ontario he has created several public art works including Stand of Birch, Archive for the City of Ottawa, Maintaining Gravity in Kitchener/Waterloo and Wave for the City of Toronto that can be viewed by residents year-round.

Commissioned by the City of Ottawa Public Art Program, Fallen Star was created in 2013 and is located in Half Moon Bay Park in Barrhaven South, directly diagonal to the Minto Recreation Complex. The approximately 14-foot (14.5 x 13.5 x 4) sculpture sits atop a hill near Cambrian and Greenbank Roads balancing on one of its five points, “as if fallen from the sky.” The cast aluminum sculpture has a textured etched exterior covered in hundreds of tiny holes embedded with LEDs that emit light, “referencing a starry sky.”

A plaque near the sculpture contains the following description:

Gazing up at the night sky is a profound experience that human beings have shared since time immemorial. One of the most magical and significant moments of stargazing is witnessing a falling star. Balanced on one of it’s 5 points, Falling Star captures this magic and brings a piece of the sky down to earth atop the toboggan hill of Half Moon Bay Park.
Creating a bridge between the immensity of the celestial universe and our place on earth, the etched and pitted surface of the cast aluminum star tells the story of its long journey. At night, light gently shines through thousands of tiny holes emulating a starry sky.
Don Maynard’s work can be found in the collections of the City of Ottawa, The Canada Council Art Bank, The Agnes Etherington Art Centre, And the Robert McLaughlin Art Gallery.

The Half Moon Bay Community Association website describes the art work and public art competition in detail and includes a link to a YouTube video showing the installation of the sculpture in the park.
