Monument to Fallen Diplomats

At the corner of the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway at Island Park Drive resides the Monument to Fallen Diplomats. The monument was inaugurated on September 20, 2012 to honour Colonel Atilla Altıkat who was assassinated at this location on the morning of August 27, 1982 and dedicated to all diplomats and public servants who have fallen in foreign service.

The monument was designed and built by a Turkish team led by sculptor Azimet Karaman, architect Levent Timurhan, architect/sculptor Reha Benderlioğlu and sculptor Necmettin Yağci, whose names appear on a small plaque on the rear of the monument.

The plaque on the right front-side of the monument contains the following text:

Monument to Fallen Diplomats
This monument honours the memory of Colonel Atilla Altıkat, Military Attaché of the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Ottawa, who was assassinated at this crossroad on August 27, 1982 by terrorists.
This monument is dedicated to all diplomats and public servants who have fallen in foreign service, and bears witness to the enduring principles of peace, freedom and co-existence shared by Turkey and Canada.
The sphere and its perfect shape symbolize the eternal resting place of the fallen. Its large open face is directed toward the “gateway of eternity”, while its smaller extremity points toward the earth, opening into the “gateway of time”. The metal prisms represent those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The single prism located at the “gateway of time” pays special tribute to Colonel Altıkat.
May the souls of our fallen be blessed and may they rest in peace.
Artists: Azimet Karaman Sculptor, Levent Timurhan Architect, Reha Benderlioğlu Architect – Sculptor.

At a total of 29 tons, 7m in diameter and 8.50m high this imposing monument appears to be constructed of solid wood. However, the cropped image below from https://worldarchitecture.org clearly shows a steel truss structure within the predominantly Iroko wood monument.
